Conventional Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces—the most popular type of braces—are made from high-grade stainless steel. These metal brackets and archwires help straighten your teeth, and you can always add colored elastics for a more colorful smile. The metal brackets align and hold your teeth straight, while archwires pull them into position.

Self-ligating Braces

If you’re a busy person on the go, you may want to consider the benefits of self-ligating braces. With this type of orthodontics, elastics are no longer needed. That means fewer appointments and less friction being placed on the tooth. Each type of self-ligating brace comes with traditional metal, ceramic or clear brackets that are the same size as metal braces. The difference is that they use a specialized clip in place of elastics to help the archwire guide teeth to place. The clip’s main function is to reduce the amount of pressure being placed on the tooth. This means fewer adjustments are required, which means less time spent in your orthodontist's chair! If you've been dreaming of straighter teeth, but don't want to sacrifice the beauty or comfort of your smile, self-ligating braces are a perfect choice.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces have some advantages over metal braces. They are not as visible, and because they are made of clear materials, can be more strikingly aesthetic than metal braces. Ceramic braces also require more attention to oral hygiene as they are larger and brittler than their metal counterparts. For these reasons, they tend to be used more on upper front teeth than on lower teeth. Ceramic braces can be used on all teeth, including those in the back of your mouth, where metal brackets might be uncomfortable.

Invisible Braces

Invisalign is a clear alternative to traditional metal braces. They can straighten your teeth in less time and are less noticeable than metal brackets and wires. They also allow you to remove the aligners for eating and drinking, allowing you to enjoy the foods you love without restrictions. When you’re deciding between Invisalign (clear aligners) and traditional metal braces, the key question is whether you want to be able to enjoy what you eat and drink while wearing your orthodontic appliance. For most people, Invisalign is a better choice because it allows them to enjoy eating foods that are less forgiving of metal brackets or wires that restrict chewing ability.
