A sudden dental issue can be a frightening and painful experience. Knowing how to react in the first few minutes can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth. At D & R Dentistry, we reserve daily openings for same-day urgent dental appointments in West Kendall.
Common Dental Urgencies & First Aid Tips
Here is what you should do immediately if you experience a dental urgency:
- Knocked-Out Tooth: Time is critical. Handle the tooth only by the crown (top), never the root. Gently rinse it with water if dirty, and try to place it back in the socket. If that's not possible, keep it moist in a glass of milk or saliva and call us immediately.
- Severe Toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently use dental floss to ensure no food is trapped between your teeth. Do NOT place aspirin directly on the gums, as this can cause chemical burns.
- Chipped or Broken Tooth: Save any broken pieces. Rinse your mouth with warm water. If there is bleeding, apply a piece of clean gauze with gentle pressure. Use a cold compress on your cheek to reduce swelling.
- Lost Crown or Filling: If a crown falls off, try to place it back on the tooth using a small amount of over-the-counter dental cement or toothpaste. Do not use superglue. Contact us immediately to have it professionally re-cemented.
